A Neutral Lover’s Guide To Adding Colour And Pattern To Your Style

I’ll walk you through it, step by step.

Listen, I get it.

I was once in your position too. It’s so easy to reach for that LBD. The LBD is an iconic look for a reason. But when you find your closet to be an array I use that word ironically) of exclusively greys, whites, and blacks, it might be time to up your game. No, I don’t mean pulling out that red-cable knit sweater your grandmother knit you six years ago and calling it a day.

Dressing to impress has always been an interest of mine. As I’ve grown from a sixteen year old with short spiky hair in a lavender satin prom gown (see my Teenage Dirtbag video on my Instagram page), I’ve become more and more comfortable playing with colours and textures. Seriously…I bought a short full on sequenced off the shoulder dress last week from Winners, and I’m so ready to wear it on NYE. But if you’re a little more intimidated about making a splash, I’ve got your back.

Start Small

You don’t need to dive into the deep-end right away. A little apprehension is normal, but beginning your technicolored journey can be simple, at first. Start with accent pieces. For example:

Bags - I LOVE a good fringe purse. It adds texture, variety, and a fun country twist to any look.

Hats - Play with shape, size, and colour. Plus, there’s nothing like an over-sized sun hat to make you feel bougie on the beach.

Shoes- Right now, I’m obsessed with my western inspired booties and sparkly stilettos. If those are a little much for you at this point in your colour journey, try a fun pair of converse or vans.

Layer, Layer, Layer!

Keep the security blanket that is your neutral toned t-shirt, or your dark jeans. Layer in a different belt and a bold necklace. Or if you’re feeling so inclined (me this winter, LOL), a giant faux fur jacket to add a little variety to your look, while still feeling comfortable with your staple neutrals underneath. I promise you, it’s not as scary as you think!

Play With Makeup

I remember the first time I tried a crazy bold lip - it changed my fashion game forever.

Was that dramatic?
Good. It’ll match my lips ;)

Whether it’s a deep red lip, a fun coloured eyeliner, or even adding some sparkle here and there, your makeup is DEFINITELY a part of your look, and can make a real difference.

Pro-tip: If you’re working with sparkles, don’t touch your eyes. There will be sparkles everywhere. Forever.

Metallics Are A Staple

Copper, silver, and gold help to bring out the more subtle colours in neutral toned clothing. We already talked about the power of a statement necklace, but what about adding something with a little more oomph, like a stack of bracelets! I NEVER take off my stack of bracelets from Indy Designs, and I know a lot of Farmhouse Facelift fans have noticed!

PS. I’m giving away a FREE stack from Indy Designs right now! Enter in my Instagram post. Canadian’s only for the giveaway (excluding Quebec) - sorry guys! However they DO ship internationally if you want to check out their shop directly. Contest closes December 23rd, winners announced Christmas Eve 2022!

Re-Visit Your Childhood

What was your favourite colour when you were a kid? Don’t say black or white. ;)

Colours we love, that we have a positive association to, are generally the colours we feel most confident in. Sure, there are skin-analysis type tests you’re able to take to determine which colours match your skin tone the best. I’m of the belief, however, that if you’re wearing something that makes YOU happy, it’s going to look great on you. So buy that lavender, turquoise, or orange piece, even if it’s “not something you’d usually wear!” If it’s your favourite, your confidence will shine.
